Let's Blog

Do you want it? We can write it!

Welcome, fellow maths nerds!

Here you will find a range of articles, reflections, and just all-around cool and interesting maths stuff. Help me fill up the page by adding your topic suggestions.

I ruminated for a long time about what would be the best first post for this page. I developed a whole range of curriculum stuff, then got halfway through an article on fraction misconceptions before I stumbled across this article that I had written in 2018. Several years ago now, but as I read through it again I realised, still relevant. In fact, more relevant than ever because as we move towards a more digitised world, the need for students to be great problem solvers and critical thinkers is becoming increasingly more important.

Critical thinking is a person's ability to reason and make judgments. In other words, can students solve a maths problem through thoughtful understanding and not rote memorisation with limited comprehension of the solution? If the answer is yes, then the student probably has well-developed number sense.

In this first article, I use number talks to show how number sense can be developed, what it means, and how it can be developed in your students. I hope you enjoy it!
